Livelihoods for Dignity & Economic Resilience
Southern Charity Foundation (SCF) is dedicated to enhancing the livelihoods of communities throughout Bangladesh, with a special emphasis on vulnerable riverine regions that face significant challenges such as river erosion, climate change, and environmental degradation. Many fishermen in these areas rely on boats for their livelihoods but often struggle with debt due to high rental costs from moneylenders known as Mahajans. Agriculture, which contributes 12% to Bangladesh’s GDP and employs about 65% of the rural population, has also been severely affected by climate change, leading to landlessness for many farmers forced to live on khas land (government-owned land).
In response to these pressing issues, SCF has implemented a Livestock Distribution for Sustainable Agriculture initiative, which provides livestock to vulnerable populations to create sustainable sources of income. This program not only boosts agricultural productivity but also improves the economic stability of these communities.
In urban areas, rickshaws and vans serve as essential modes of transportation for economically disadvantaged individuals. With low financial barriers—such as being exempt from income tax and formal registration—these vehicles represent accessible livelihood options for many.
Additionally, recognizing the traditional sewing skills of women and the growing demand in the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) industry, where approximately 80% of workers are female, SCF has launched initiatives to empower these women. Through the Empowerment through Sewing Machine Distribution program and training in market networking, SCF equips women for self-employment, fostering economic independence and enhancing gender equality.
Through these strategic livelihood initiatives, SCF supports 6,460 individuals, creating sustainable economic opportunities and strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities across Bangladesh for a brighter future.
