Watercraft Distribution for Livelihood Enhancement (Boat)

In the riverine regions of Bangladesh, particularly in the southern areas, communities grapple with severe challenges due to river erosion, climate change, and other adverse environmental factors. Many residents, primarily fishermen, depend on boats for their livelihoods. Unfortunately, the harsh reality is that they often rely on Mahajans (moneylenders) to rent these essential vessels, incurring exorbitant interest rates that consume nearly 80% of their income in loan repayments. This situation leaves them with minimal financial resources for their families.

To combat this cycle of exploitation and promote sustainable livelihoods, the Southern Charity Foundation (SCF) has launched the Watercraft Distribution for Livelihood Enhancement program. This initiative provides boats directly to fishermen, liberating them from the exploitative grip of Mahajans and significantly enhancing their economic prospects.

To date, SCF has successfully distributed 60 boats, benefiting over 600 individuals within these vulnerable communities. This initiative not only empowers fishermen to secure a more stable income but also bolsters the economic resilience of their families and the wider community, fostering a path towards self-sufficiency and dignity.

Through such targeted interventions, SCF is dedicated to improving livelihoods and ensuring that families can thrive despite the challenging environmental conditions they face.
